Horní Cerekev Castles

Horní Cerekev Castles form an unusual two-part fortification in the town of Horní Cerekev, in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic, roughly 14 km southeast of Pelhřimov and 19 km southwest of Jihlava. The plural "castles" in the name is deliberate: the site actually splits into an upper section, now a lasting ruin, and a lower baroque section that survives in far better shape.

How did one site end up as two castles?

The story starts with a medieval moated stronghold (a water fortress) that in the 14th century belonged to Dobeš z Bechyně. The site's real transformation came under the Leskovec family, who held Horní Cerekev from the early 15th century until the mid-17th century. It was Jan Leskovec who, around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, had the old stronghold rebuilt in Renaissance style, adding the more decorative features still partly visible in the lower part of the complex today.

The next major shift came in the 18th century. Through the marriage of Countess Eleonora Kristina Metternich, the Cerekev estate passed to the Regal family, who carried out a further transformation — turning the Renaissance residence into a baroque castle. The date of this conversion, 1734, is still carved into stone above one of the entrances.
