Batelov Castle

Batelov Castle, often called the "Old Castle" to distinguish it from a younger residence of the same noble family nearby, stands in the market town of Batelov, in the Jihlava District of the Vysočina Region in the eastern Czech Republic. Batelov lies roughly 16 kilometres southwest of Jihlava, and the municipality also includes Bezděčín, one of five settlements that make up the town today.

How did the castle come about?

The site originally held a medieval fortified manor, or tvrz, built around 1400 — a modest fortified seat typical of Czech rural estates of the period. In 1586, in the second half of the 16th century, the owner Jiří Čížovský z Čížova had it rebuilt into a Renaissance-style castle. The renovation gave the building a more representative form, though its medieval core remained part of the structure.

How did its role change over time?

Around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle lost its status as the family's main seat once a second, "new" castle was built nearby to serve as their residence. From then on, the older building was used mainly for estate administration. Further alterations followed during the Baroque period, and the last major rebuilding took place in 1880. For centuries the building thus stood in the shadow of its younger counterpart, without ever losing its original Renaissance character.

What does the castle look like today?

Today's building is a single-storey, rectangular structure with a small turret rising from the centre of the roof and a white façade. Traces of Renaissance sgraffito decoration are still visible on the exterior, a reminder of its 16th-century origins. The castle is listed as a protected cultural monument, registered under heritage number 33201/7-4679, and remains in private ownership.

Can visitors go inside?

No regular public access is offered. Following its reconstruction, the building functions as private property, and its interiors are closed to outside visitors. Travellers exploring Batelov's town centre can still view the castle from the outside, along with the second, later castle standing close by.
