About this place
Holy Trinity Church in Třebíč is a small Gothic church standing within the grounds of the Old Cemetery in the Domky district, in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. It serves as a subsidiary church of the Třebíč town parish and is listed as a protected cultural monument.
How old is the church?
The earliest written record of the church dates to 1468 and appears in a chronicle compiled in 1574 by Eliáš Střelka Náchodský, describing the devastation Třebíč suffered after the town was captured by Matthias Corvinus. The building itself is thought to be older still: most sources place its origin in the early 15th century, while some accounts claim a church — or at least its predecessor — already stood on the site in the 9th century.
Renovations followed over the centuries. Between 1564 and 1575 the church was adapted for Utraquist worship, giving it much of its present form. In 1661 the roof turret and roof structure were repaired, and further work between 1671 and 1677 gave the building new Baroque plasterwork. In 1677 the Bishop of Olomouc, Jan Josef Breuner, formally consecrated the church in a ceremony intended to reinforce Catholicism's still-fragile position in the region. A tower was added in 1701, funded jointly by the town and Karel Ferdinand of Valdštejn, and between 1715 and 1719 it was joined to the main body of the church, alongside new side chapels dedicated to St. Anne and St. Joseph.
What survives from the original building?
The original church was considerably smaller than today's structure: a plain, single-nave Gothic building without a tower, most likely built in the first half of the 15th century. It retains a rare Gothic collar-beam roof truss and traces of Gothic frescoes depicting angels, now concealed beneath later plaster. The building's greatest artistic value lies in its Gothic presbytery with stone vaulting — the one part that has kept its medieval character intact despite the many later alterations to the rest of the church.
Where exactly is it located?
The church stands within the Old Cemetery in the Horka-Domky district, bounded by Ruská and Sokolská streets, Gorazdovo Square, and the Brno–Jihlava railway line. The cemetery began forming around the church in 1607, after the older burial ground beside the Church of St. Martin of Tours in the town centre fell out of use.
