Hasištejn Castle

Hasištejn Castle is a ruined hilltop stronghold in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), standing right above the village of Místo, between Kadaň, Klášterec nad Ohří and Chomutov in northwestern Bohemia, Czech Republic. The roofs are long gone, but the walls and core buildings have survived well enough for the ruin to rank among the region's main sights.

When was Hasištejn Castle built?

Between 1891 and 1892, the last private owner, Emanuel Karsch, carried out a major conservation of the ruin: he reinforced the walls, fitted the towers with new roofs, restored the chapel and built a new staircase. Thanks to that work, most of the defensive walls and buildings survive today, though ceilings have collapsed in many places and the roofs are gone again. The former palace building now houses a restaurant, and one of the towers has been converted into a lookout point with views over the surrounding hills of the Ore Mountains.
