Hadí kopec

Raspenava, Czechia

About this place

Hadí kopec is a small yet geologically remarkable nature monument in northern Czechia, set within the Frýdlant Projection (Frýdlantský výběžek) in the Liberec District. It lies just south of the town of Raspenava, near the village of Krásný Les, inside the Peklo Natural Park. The protected area covers roughly 1.8 hectares and sits at an elevation of about 350 to 380 meters above sea level, with its highest point reaching 378 meters.

What makes Hadí kopec special?

At the heart of the reserve stands a rocky basalt massif that the meandering Lomnice stream has been carving through for thousands of years. Rather than flowing around this hard obstacle, the water gradually split the basalt body into two parts, forming a narrow, scenic gorge. On the exposed rock faces, visitors can see the columnar jointing typical of cooled basalt lava — often nicknamed "stone organs" for their regular, polygonal pillar shapes. This kind of geological formation is uncommon in the region and is the main reason the site was designated a protected nature monument.

The area lies within the geomorphological district known as the Raspenava Highlands (Raspenavská pahorkatina) and was once part of the Chlum military training ground. That restricted access for decades, which paradoxically helped preserve the site's untouched character.

Vegetation and landscape

Thanks to the nutrient-rich basaltic subsoil, the slopes of Hadí kopec support a patch of deciduous forest typical of lower mountain elevations, with lime and oak trees and a rich understory that includes plant species usually found on warmer, more fertile sites. Along its course through the valley, the Lomnice stream forms natural meanders and oxbow features that add variety to the landscape and support local biodiversity.

How to get there

No marked hiking trail leads directly to Hadí kopec, which keeps the site relatively quiet and off the beaten path. The best starting point is the southern edge of Raspenava, from where visitors can follow meadow paths or skirt around the Chlum hill. Along the way, it is worth looking out for the historic Čapkov Oak, a well-known local landmark that also serves as a useful orientation point.

Who is it for?

Hadí kopec appeals mainly to geology enthusiasts and lovers of untamed nature who value a quiet encounter with the landscape, away from crowds. The lack of tourist infrastructure and marked paths means the visit calls for a bit more confidence in navigating on your own, but it rewards visitors with an authentic look at a striking rock formation shaped by natural erosion over thousands of years.
