The building's history hasn't always been smooth. It closed in 1970, and six years later its owners applied to the city council for permission to demolish it. Demolition never went ahead: in 1982 the Córdoba city government took over the property, and the theatre was formally recognized as a site of historic and artistic value. A thorough restoration followed between 1983 and 1986, led by architect José Antonio Gómez Luengo, who preserved the original shape of the building and its auditorium. Gran Teatro reopened on March 19, 1986, with the 11th National Flamenco Art Competition as its inaugural event.
