Gouffre Berger is a limestone cave system in the Vercors massif, within the commune of Engins in the Isère department of France. For nearly a decade it held the title of the deepest known cave on Earth, and it remains one of the landmark sites in the history of caving. Its entrance sits high on the Vercors plateau, well away from any tourist trail — this is a destination for skilled cavers, not a sightseeing stop.
Who discovered Gouffre Berger, and when?
The entrance was located on 24 May 1953 by Joseph Berger, together with Georges Bouvet, Ruiz de Arcaute and Marc Jouffrey, who named the cave after the team's leader. Early descents in 1954 reached roughly -900 metres. A year later cavers pushed to nearly -985 metres, and in 1956, following a multi-day push modelled on Himalayan-style mountaineering expeditions, a team finally reached a sump at -1122 metres — the first time anyone had gone below the 1,000-metre mark underground.
Why was it once the world's deepest cave?
Between 1954 and 1963, Gouffre Berger held the record as the deepest cave known to exist. It lost that status once explorers pushed further into the Pierre Saint-Martin system on the French-Spanish border. Later surveying extended the known Gouffre Berger network considerably: today it reaches a depth of -1271 metres with 45,118 metres of mapped passage, placing it around 40th among the world's deepest caves and still 4th deepest in France.
What makes this cave so demanding?
The passage network is notoriously complex from a technical standpoint. Its entrance series is prone to sudden, heavy flooding — water levels in the main galleries rise in direct response to rainfall on the surface, and can take up to ten hours or more to recede afterward. Flash flooding in the narrower sections has historically been the cave's greatest danger, having proved fatal for cavers caught underground during storms. Weather forecasting and a solid understanding of the cave's hydrology are essential before any descent. Getting back to the surface from the deepest sections, moving efficiently with no long stops, can itself take somewhere between fifteen and thirty hours.
Is Gouffre Berger still being explored today?
Exploration never really stopped. For decades, cavers attempted to link the system to the neighbouring Gouffre de la Fromagère; a diver named Freddo Poggia first found a connection through a flooded sump back in the 1990s. It wasn't until 29 December 2024 that cavers Cédric Lachat and David Parrot completed a dry junction between the two systems — no diving required — closing out a search that had run for decades. Even a cave this thoroughly studied still had unmapped ground left to find.
