Bistra

Poljanica Bistranska, Croatia

About this place

Bistra Municipality is a local government unit in northern Croatia, in Zagreb County, just west of the capital. Its centre is the village of Poljanica Bistranska, and the territory stretches from the ridge of Medvednica mountain down to the valley of the Krapina river. It is a quiet area for visitors who want greenery, forest trails and village scenery without travelling far from Zagreb.

Where is Bistra and how big is it?

The municipality covers roughly 52.7 square kilometres and runs across the western slopes of Medvednica. The land descends gradually from mountain forest to the Krapina valley, so the scenery shifts within a short distance: wooded hillsides give way to open farmland at the foot of the mountain. The 2011 census recorded 6,632 residents. Bistra has existed as a local government unit since 1995.

What is there to see in Poljanica Bistranska?

Poljanica Bistranska lies at the foot of Medvednica and partly on its slopes. Its best-known landmark is the parish church of St Nicholas, built in 1631 next to a spring. After earthquake damage it was rebuilt several times, so its present look is the result of successive reconstructions. The village population is quoted differently depending on the source; the 2011 census gives 1,438 people.

Are there hiking trails in Bistra?

Yes. The municipality lies in the western part of Medvednica Nature Park, which was established in 1981 and covers about 22,800 hectares. A popular walk leads from Poljanica Bistranska up to Risnjak. Within the park, in the catchment of the Bistra stream, lies the Markovčak–Bistra forest reserve. Near the park entrance in Bistra you can see a geological column, and a protected stand of yew trees grows in the entrance area.

What cultural sights does Bistra offer?

In Novaki Bistranski, the former school building has been turned into a cultural and tourism centre. It is a useful stop for learning more about the area and planning a longer walk in the park.

Who is this area for?

Bistra suits a short escape from Zagreb: a forest walk, a modest mountain hike or a look at village corners off the usual tourist routes. It has no single headline attraction. It works better as a calm base for walking and for discovering a less visited side of Medvednica.
