About this place
Frognerbadet is an open-air pool complex in the Frogner borough of Oslo, designed by the Norwegian architect Frode Rinnan. Built in the 1950s, it has long been one of the best-known summer gathering spots in the Norwegian capital.
What is Frognerbadet?
It is a public outdoor swimming facility where Oslo residents spend warm days. The complex sits in Frogner, an affluent western part of the city, close to parkland and some of the district's best-known cultural addresses. Its designer, Frode Rinnan, is associated with Norwegian functionalism and postwar public architecture. Olav Tveten is also named as a co-architect.
What can you see here?
The main draw is the diving pool, with springboards and platforms at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 metres. The diving tower stands out across the site and serves as its visual trademark. Beyond diving, there are swimming pools, and the whole facility is laid out for families, children, casual swimmers and anyone who simply wants to lie in the sun.
Why is Frognerbadet known beyond Oslo?
The pool is tied to the origins of "death diving", a playful, spectacular style of jumping in which showmanship and creativity count for more than classical technique. The annual Døds Diving World Championship is held here. If your visit coincides with the event, it is a memorable reason to come.
Frognerbadet and architecture
For architecture fans, the complex is an example of postwar modernist public building in Norway. Its simple forms, open layout and prominent diving tower show how city recreation facilities were conceived in that period.
Renovation and planning your visit
The complex is undergoing rehabilitation led by the City of Oslo and, according to municipal information, is closed to visitors while the work continues. Before you travel, check the current status on the Oslo municipality website or on Visit Oslo, since the planned reopening concerns upcoming summer seasons.
