Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo

Machico, Portugal

About this place

Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo is a small eighteenth-century fortress in Machico, on the east coast of Madeira. It stands beside the bay in the historic centre of the town and is easy to reach on a stroll along the seafront. It suits visitors who enjoy defensive architecture and local history but do not want a long hike.

What was the fort built for?

Construction was commissioned in 1706 by Captain Francisco Dias Franco, a clerk at the Machico town council. The fort was meant to protect the bay from pirates and corsairs, who repeatedly threatened the island. Together with the São João Batista fort, it formed part of the defences of this stretch of coast. Machico was one of the earliest settlements on Madeira, so securing its harbour mattered.

What does it look like?

The fort has a triangular plan, with one corner pointing toward the sea. The walls are crowned with local stone merlons and a projecting cord course. On the landward side there is a stone portal with a round arch. The compact, plain shape shows what a modest, practical coastal fortification looked like in the early 1700s.

What part did it play in history?

During the Portuguese Civil War (1828–1834), Miguelist troops landed on Madeira to overthrow the liberal regime. According to available accounts, Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo was the last fortress on the island to surrender. After the Republic was proclaimed in 1910, the crown was removed from the stone coat of arms above the gate, a visible trace of the change of regime.

How is it used today?

In 1940 the property was entrusted to the Fiscal Guard and classified as a property of public interest. In 1993 it was donated to the Regional Government of Madeira. Over the years it has served as a tax guard post, a tourist office and the municipal culture office. Today it houses Madeira's European Office and the seat of Machico's Municipal Assembly. Because of these roles, the interior may not be open to visitors, so the main attraction is viewing the building from outside.

Planning a visit

Combine the fort with a walk through central Machico: the parish church, the promenade and the beach in the bay. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to look at the walls, the portal and the view over the bay. Morning or late afternoon gives softer light and better photos of the stonework against the water.
