About this place
Pico do Formosinho is the highest peak of the Serra da Arrábida and the highest point in Arrábida Natural Park, in the Setúbal district of Portugal. It rises to 501 m above sea level and a geodetic marker stands at the summit. The coordinates are 38.48108 N, 9.00057 W.
Where is Formosinho and why climb it?
The peak sits on the Setúbal Peninsula, in the range that runs along the coast between Setúbal and Sesimbra. Here the Serra da Arrábida drops steeply to the sea, and green vegetation meets pale limestone rock. That makes Formosinho one of the best viewpoints near Lisbon, reachable on foot with no climbing gear.
What can you see from the top?
The panorama is wide. Below lie the Sado estuary and the Tróia Peninsula, with the Azeitão area and the north bank of the Tagus beyond. In clear weather Lisbon and the Tagus estuary come into view, and on the horizon the Serra de Sintra and Serra de Montejunto. Views in several directions make this a favourite finish to a full day's hike.
How do you get to Pico do Formosinho?
Several hiking trails lead to the summit, ranging from moderate to hard and differing in length and elevation gain. Popular routes include:
- the PR2 STB "Alto do Formosinho" trail,
- a route linking the summit with the Hermitage of São João do Deserto,
- variants starting near Portinho da Arrábida, including via the Miradouro do Portinho da Arrábida viewpoint,
- routes from the Casais da Serra side.
Check the description of your chosen route before setting out, as distance, climb and difficulty vary widely. Bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes with good grip, since the ground is rocky.
