Fojtecký mokřad

Fojtka, Czechia

About this place

Fojtecký mokřad is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument lying southwest of the village of Fojtka, in the Mníšek municipality of the Liberec Region in northern Czechia. The site falls within the Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area and forms part of a biological corridor linking the Studený vrch and Poledník hills, giving it importance well beyond its modest size.

What does the site look like?

The reserve is a mosaic of wet meadows, small stands of trees, and permanent grassland, crossed by the Radčický stream. This watercourse keeps the ground saturated year-round and shapes the distinctive marsh vegetation for which the area was placed under protection.

Why is this wetland protected?

Fojtecký mokřad safeguards a rare combination of wetland plant communities, including several legally protected species. Bog myrtle, a shrub known for its aromatic leaves, and bladderwort, a carnivorous plant adapted to nutrient-poor acidic wetlands, both grow within the reserve. The adjoining wet meadows are home to wild marsh orchids of the dactylorhiza group. Habitats of this kind are among the rarest in the Central European landscape, since drainage and agricultural intensification have eliminated most comparable wetlands elsewhere.

A history of practical use

Long before the area gained protected status, the meadows served a practical purpose: they were traditionally mown to produce plant fodder for livestock kept on nearby farms. This extensive, low-intensity mowing regime inadvertently helped preserve the site's biodiversity, since regular cutting prevented reeds and shrubs from taking over and crowding out the more delicate wetland species.

Can visitors explore the reserve?

Direct access to the interior of the nature monument is limited, as the land lies within a privately operated golf course. Part of the wetland, however, can be reached via a wooden boardwalk that connects different holes of the course, allowing people to cross the wettest sections without disturbing the protected vegetation underfoot. This arrangement balances recreational use of the land with the need to keep the marsh habitat intact, though wandering off the marked boardwalk is not possible.

How to get there

Fojtecký mokřad sits right next to the village of Fojtka, close to the Fojtka dam and its reservoir, within the Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory). The surrounding area is a popular recreational destination in the Liberec Region, combining hiking opportunities with the scenery typical of this foothill landscape.
