Fervenza do Ézaro

Fervenza do Ézaro is a waterfall on the Xallas River in Dumbría, in the province of A Coruña, on Galicia's Costa da Morte. It is the only waterfall on the Iberian Peninsula that plunges directly into the sea — the Xallas ends its course at the Ézaro inlet, in the parish of Santa Uxía do Ézaro, cascading straight into the Atlantic.

Where it is and what it looks like

On its final stretch, the Xallas drops around 155 meters down the slope of Monte Pindo, with the cascade that meets the ocean measuring roughly 40 meters. This is an unusual phenomenon on a European scale — very few rivers on the continent end their course with a waterfall that pours directly into the sea, which makes Ézaro stand out among Galicia's natural attractions.

At the entrance to the Ézaro inlet there's a small dock and a free parking area. A wooden footbridge leads from the parking area to the waterfall itself, and a viewpoint set above the cascade offers views over the Xallas estuary and the Dumbría coastline.

The power plant and the Electricity Interpretation Centre

At the foot of the waterfall sits the O Pindo hydroelectric plant, which affects the river's natural flow — part of the water is diverted for power generation before reaching the cascade. The old plant building has been converted into the Ézaro Electricity Interpretation Centre (also known as the Electricity Museum). It can be visited free of charge on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11:00 to 13:45 and from 16:00 to 19:45.

The Ézaro viewpoint and Monte Pindo

A separate attraction is the Mirador do Ézaro, reached via a steep road that's demanding even by car. The waterfall itself isn't visible from this viewpoint, but it offers sweeping views of Monte Pindo — a legendary granite mountain rising 627 meters just 2 kilometers from the shoreline. The landscape has been compared to the Norwegian fjords, with steep rocky slopes dropping straight into the inlet — a sight rarely found on the Iberian Peninsula.

When to visit

The best time to visit is autumn, winter, and early spring, when rainfall is more abundant and the Xallas River — and therefore the waterfall — carries noticeably more water. In summer, when water levels drop, the cascade can be much more modest, and its intensity also depends on how the power plant is being operated.
