Farfarà Waterfall near Pontremoli ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the Lunigiana region, where the Verde stream plunges more than 30 metres through dense Ligurian Apennine forest.

Where does the name come from?

Farfarà is an old local term for dry-stone mountain shepherds' huts — built from local rock without mortar. The hamlet that once stood near the waterfall consisted of these structures, and both the settlement and the cascade carry the name.

Getting there

The waterfall lies along the Via degli Abati, a medieval monks' route that has linked the monastery of Bobbio in the province of Piacenza to Pontremoli since the early Middle Ages. The trail passes through the hamlet of Cervara and skirts Lake Verde, whose deep green colour comes from the dense surrounding vegetation.

The walk to the viewpoint above the falls takes around 40 minutes and requires no special preparation, making it suitable for families and casual hikers. Those seeking more challenge can ascend the riverbed directly, though this requires appropriate gear and prior hiking experience.
