EXIT Theater

Zagrzeb, Croatia

About this place

EXIT Theatre (Teatar Exit) is an independent theatre in Zagreb whose productions are aimed mainly at adult audiences. It is one of the best-known alternative stages in Croatia, and in 2009 it was named one of the country's top Croatian brands.

What is EXIT Theatre?

It is a repertory theatre without a permanent acting ensemble. Performers are brought together for individual productions, and each show is built as a separate project. The theatre operates independently of city and state institutions, which gives it room for a bolder, more author-driven programme.

How did it begin?

The company was founded in 1994 by Matko Raguž and Nataša Lušetić. Since 1998 it has been based at Ilica 208, in a building that was formerly a cinema. The auditorium holds about 300 seats, large enough for a sizeable audience while keeping the intimate feel typical of an independent stage.

What can you see here?

The theatre is known for its own original productions and for staging socially critical works by contemporary foreign playwrights. The repertoire is geared mainly towards adults, so it is worth reading the description of a particular show before buying tickets. Performances are usually in Croatian, so check in advance whether the title you are interested in offers subtitles.

Awards and work abroad

The theatre has won hundreds of awards, including the City of Zagreb award twice. The company also performs abroad frequently, bringing its productions to international audiences. The 2009 recognition as one of the top Croatian brands shows that its reputation reaches well beyond the local scene.

A second stage

In 2018 a small second stage, Studio Exit, opened on Gundulićeva street. It hosts smaller, more experimental formats and complements the programme of the main hall on Ilica.
