Art Pavilion in Zagreb

Zagreb, Croatia

About this place

The Art Pavilion in Zagreb (Croatian: Umjetnički paviljon) is an art gallery in the heart of the Croatian capital, regarded as the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe. It has operated since 1898 and remains the only building in Zagreb designed from the start to house large-scale exhibitions.

Where is the Art Pavilion in Zagreb?

The building stands in the Lower Town, on the Lenuci Horseshoe, the chain of green squares linking the city centre. It sits on the northern side of King Tomislav Square, right by the Central Station, south of Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square. From the station it is only a few minutes on foot, which makes the gallery a natural first stop for anyone arriving by train.

How was the Art Pavilion built?

The idea of a gallery was first raised in the spring of 1895 by the painter Vlaho Bukovac. An opportunity came a year later: a prefabricated pavilion with a steel frame was erected for the 1896 Millennium Exhibition in Budapest. When the exhibition ended, the structure was taken down and its steel frame was moved to Zagreb. A competition was launched for the future gallery, and the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, known for their theatre designs, adapted the structure for its new site.

Construction was carried out by local contractors under the supervision of engineer Milan Lenucci, whose name is tied to the whole green Horseshoe layout.

When did the gallery open?

The pavilion opened on 15 December 1898 with the Croatian Salon exhibition. The initiative came from a group of Croatian painters and sculptors led by Vlaho Bukovac and Robert Frangeš-Mihanović. Since that day the building has served art, and its story is closely tied to the growth of Croatian artistic life.
