Evangelical Church in Kletné
The Evangelical Church in Kletné is an Empire-style church built in 1811, standing in a small settlement within the municipality of Suchdol nad Odrou, in the Nový Jičín District of the Moravian-Silesian Region. Although Kletné today has only around 200 residents, the place carries a long Protestant tradition reaching back to the era of Jan Amos Comenius.
When and in what style was the church built?
The building dates to 1811 and was raised in the Empire style, as confirmed by surviving foundation inscriptions referring to the imperial and ecclesiastical permissions granted for its construction. It is a single-nave, oriented, brick building with plastered walls and sandstone elements around the portals and base. On the southwest facade stands a square tower that, below the crowning cornice, widens into a projecting portico. The tower is topped with a bell-shaped roof, an octagonal lantern and a cross, clad in sheet metal with an ochre finish. On the northeast side, the nave closes with an offset, five-sided sanctuary lit by windows set in its angled walls, flanked symmetrically by sacristies with galleries on the upper level. The nave roof is gabled, broken by pairs of arched dormers, while the sanctuary and side annexes are covered by hipped roofs finished in grey sheet metal.
Where does the local Evangelical community come from?
The Protestant history of the area around Kletné predates the church building itself by centuries. In nearby Hladké Životice, a small congregation existed in the 17th century where sermons were delivered by Jan Amos Comenius, the exiled bishop of the Unity of the Brethren. Comenius is credited with dedicating one of the catechisms he wrote in exile in Amsterdam to eight surrounding communities, Kletné among them — a trace of how strong the Bohemian Brethren's presence once was here, despite the persecution that followed the Battle of White Mountain. The church built in 1811, already in the era of Josephine religious tolerance, allowed the local Evangelical community to worship openly and legally after centuries of clandestine practice.
What does the area around the church look like today?
Kletné has been an integral part of the municipality of Suchdol nad Odrou since 1974; before that, from 1850, it functioned as an independent settlement. It lies roughly 3 km northwest of the center of Suchdol, in the southern part of the Oderské vrchy landscape park, amid hilly, wooded terrain. A defining feature of the landscape is a small reservoir on the Kletenský stream, covering 1.75 hectares, popular with visitors to the area. Near the church stand other sacred and memorial features, including a roadside stone cross from 1853 and the Chapel of Saint Francis.
Can the church be visited?
The building is listed in the Czech heritage register (Památkový katalog) as a protected monument, confirming its architectural and historical value. Given the small scale of the settlement and the local, parish character of the congregation, access tends to be occasional rather than regular — it is worth checking current availability of the interior in advance, especially if traveling from farther afield.
