About this place
The Evangelical Church in Pardubice stands at the corner of Sladkovského and Hronovická streets, marking the spot where a local Protestant community first put down roots at the end of the 19th century. It is a modest but distinctive building that still functions as an active parish church and offers visitors a small but interesting window into the region's religious history and architecture.
Where did this congregation come from?
The Evangelical community in Pardubice grew during the second half of the 19th century, largely as a result of the town's industrial expansion. New factories drew workers from across the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, including Protestants who settled in the area. From 1 November 1889, services were held in the building of a former gymnasium (secondary school), but it soon became clear that the growing congregation needed a permanent home. In 1892, the "Society for the Construction of the Lord's Church in Pardubice" was founded, chaired by František Hoblík. These efforts led to the construction of the church in 1897, based on designs by the Prague builder Josef Blecha. The building was formally opened on 29 June 1897.
What does the building look like?
The church is built in a Neo-Renaissance style and is topped with a slender tower that is visible from the surrounding streets. Inside, it houses a valued pipe organ, which still accompanies congregational singing during services and is also used for organ concerts held in the church.
Which denomination does it belong to today?
Since 1918, the church has belonged to the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, a denomination formed by the union of the two older Protestant churches active in the Czech lands — the Reformed (Calvinist) and the Lutheran. The building is looked after and used by the local parish congregation.
Can visitors attend a service or see inside the church?
Yes. Services take place year-round, always on Sunday at 9:00 AM. The church is also occasionally opened for cultural events, including organ concerts that make use of the building's acoustics and its historic organ.
