Church of Saint John the Baptist (Pardubice)

Pardubice, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Pardubice is a small Renaissance church standing on Bratranců Veverkových street in the Zelené Předměstí district. Although it stands in the shadow of Pardubice's more famous landmarks, it is one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in the city, with a history stretching back to the early 16th century.

Who built the church and when?

The church was founded by the Lords of Pernštejn, the powerful noble family that controlled the Pardubice estate at the time and left a lasting mark on the region's architecture. Construction began in 1510, but finishing the building took decades — work continued until 1563–1570, when the church reached its final form.

What does the church look like architecturally?

The building has a simple single-nave layout closed off by a four-sided presbytery, with a sacristy attached on the north corner. The saddle roof of the nave is topped with tall gables typical of the Pardubice region. The western gable is stepped and decorated with motifs resembling defensive battlements, crowned with a small turret — a detail that gives this modest church a somewhat fortified, representative character typical of Renaissance sacred architecture in the Pardubice area.

Why are there old tombstones near the church?

The church stands on the site of Pardubice's former main cemetery, which is why several Renaissance tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries can still be found in its immediate surroundings. It is a rare chance to encounter both sacred architecture and historical funerary art from the same period in one small area.

What else stands next to the church?

In 1788, more than two centuries after the church was completed, a new bell tower was built on the foundations of the former ossuary. Its construction reflected the changing needs of the parish and the gradual transformation of the church's old cemetery grounds.

Has the church been renovated?

Yes, the entire church complex has undergone conservation work on several occasions. The first major renovation took place in 1881, followed by a more extensive restoration carried out between 1938 and 1940. Thanks to this work, the building has preserved its historical character to this day.
