Estany de la Cabana

Estany de la Cabana is a high-mountain glacial lake near Espot, inside the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, in the Pallars Sobirà region of Catalonia. Sitting at roughly 2,180 metres above sea level, it lies between the Estany de Ratera and Estany Gran d'Amitges lakes, surrounded by the rugged ridgelines and glacial cirques typical of this stretch of the Pyrenees.

Where exactly is the lake?

The lake sits in the western part of the national park, part of a chain of lakes that links the Sant Maurici valley with higher glacial basins. Because of its position next to Estany de Ratera and Estany Gran d'Amitges, Cabana is rarely visited on its own — it's usually one stop on a longer hike through the lakes above Sant Maurici.

How do you get there?

The starting point is the village of Espot. By car, you can drive up to the Prat de Pierró car park, from which a marked trail continues on foot — reaching the Sant Maurici area takes about an hour to ninety minutes on an easy, well-signposted path. An alternative is the 4x4 taxi service that runs from Espot straight to the shore of Estany de Sant Maurici, cutting the approach down to around 20 minutes. From there, reaching Estany de la Cabana and the neighbouring Estany de Ratera requires a further, more demanding stretch on foot, over rocky mountain terrain — sturdy trekking shoes are a must. Trails in this part of the park are marked with yellow waymarks.

What will you see once you're there?

The lake itself is the main draw — clear, cold water set among rock and alpine meadow, characteristic of the high-altitude glacial lakes scattered across this part of the Pyrenees. Nearby, Estany de Ratera (2,136 m) hosts one of the park's more dramatic waterfalls, connecting the hanging Ratera valley with the main Sant Maurici valley below. The whole area is rich in rocky ridgelines, viewpoints over the surrounding peaks, and the mosaic of lakes, streams and high mountain pastures that defines Aigüestortes.

When is the best time to visit?

Hiking season in this part of the park runs from summer into early autumn, once trails are clear of snow and high-altitude weather is more settled. Pyrenean weather can shift quickly, though — even in summer, temperatures above 2,000 metres run noticeably cooler than in the valley, so warm layers and a rain shell are worth packing regardless of the season.

This is a route for hikers who enjoy mountain walking and don't mind a longer, more demanding climb. Families and less experienced walkers often stick to the easier loop around Estany de Sant Maurici, leaving the higher lakes, Cabana included, to more seasoned hikers.
