Estany petit de Saburó

Estany Petit de Saburó is a small glacial lake sitting at 2,582 metres above sea level, at the head of the Vall Fosca valley in the municipality of la Torre de Cabdella (Pallars Jussà, Catalan Pyrenees). It lies northeast of the village of Cabdella, in the kind of stark, treeless high-mountain terrain typical of this stretch of the Pyrenees.

The reference point for the whole region is the infrastructure tied to the Estany Gento–Sallente hydroelectric scheme. In 1990, a cable car (telefèric) built by FECSA for the construction of that power station opened to the public — it links the Sallente reservoir (1,770 m) with Estany Gento (2,573 m), an altitude very close to that of Estany Petit de Saburó itself. This upper section of Vall Fosca, above Cabdella, is the natural gateway for exploring the whole glacial lake system, including this particular lake.

Given the altitude — over 2,500 metres — and the terrain, reaching the lake demands a reasonable level of fitness and mountain preparedness. This is not a spot you simply drive up to.

When should you visit?

Because of its high-altitude setting, the lake and its surrounding routes are realistically accessible mainly from late spring through early autumn. Outside that window, snow and ice can linger, and weather can turn quickly — a well-known trait of the high Catalan Pyrenees.
