Estany de Baborte

Estany de Baborte is a glacial lake in the municipality of Alins, in the Vallferrera valley, within the Alt Pirineu Natural Park in the Spanish Pyrenees (Lleida province, Catalonia). It sits at 2,337 metres above sea level, making it one of the higher lakes in this part of the range.

How do you get there?

The starting point is the Farga car park. From there the trail runs past Bordes de la Rebuira to Cabana de Basello (1,971 m), then joins the GR-TRF route for the final climb known as the "costa de Llats." The ascent is demanding and calls for good fitness and proper trekking footwear. An early start is advisable so you can be back down before dusk, especially in summer when afternoon storms are common in the Pyrenees.

What will you see?

The lake has an elongated shape running from northwest to south, a maximum length of 519 metres, and a surface area of 6.86 hectares. It sits within a ring of peaks that give the spot the feel of a true glacial cirque: Pic de Llats (2,693 m) to the east, Tres Pics (2,648 m) to the west, Pic de Baborte (2,934 m) to the north, and Pic de Pedres Blanques (2,765 m) to the northeast. The water carries the deep turquoise-grey tone typical of high-mountain lakes, shifting with the light and cloud cover through the day.

Just above the lake, at the foot of the Baborte cirque, stands the Refugi del Cinquantenari, also known as Refugi de Baborte. It's an unmanned, orange-coloured bivouac-style shelter owned by the Unió Excursionista de Catalunya, with room for 16 people. It was built and inaugurated on 12 September 1981 to mark the club's fiftieth anniversary. For many hikers, the refuge is the natural resting point before pushing on further, or a base for longer trips across the surrounding ridges.

Estany de Baborte also serves as a starting point for more ambitious high-mountain ascents — to Pic de Baborte (2,934 m), Pic dels Estanys (2,955 m), and Pic del Sotllo (3,073 m). Worth noting: the same municipality of Alins holds two other, separate lakes — Estany d'Estats and Estany de Sotllo — each in its own cirque, so it's worth double-checking which trail actually leads to Baborte when planning a trip.

When should you visit?

The best season to visit is summer, from June to September, when the trail is free of snow and the weather is at its most stable. Earlier in spring or later in autumn, snow can linger on the higher sections of the approach and daylight hours shrink, making a safe return harder. In winter the route calls for the gear and experience needed for high-mountain snow travel.
