Espacio Cultural Serrería Belga

Espacio Cultural Serrería Belga is a municipal cultural centre in Madrid, the only city-run venue standing directly on the Art Walk — the route linking the capital's great art museums, recognised together with the neighbouring Paseo del Prado and Retiro park as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Paisaje de la Luz". The building sits between Calle de la Alameda and Calle de Cenicero, a short walk from Atocha station.

Where does the name come from?

The name points straight to the building's original job. It went up around 1925 as a sawmill, owned by the Belgian company Sociedad Belga de los Pinares de El Paular, which processed pine timber from forests north of Madrid. The industrial hall was designed by architect Manuel Álvarez Naya. After decades of other uses, the structure underwent a full renovation and reopened to the public in 2022 as one of the city's newest cultural spaces.

The centre covers close to 4,000 square metres. One floor, over 300 m² on its own, is given over to contemporary art exhibitions that rotate regularly, so it's worth checking the current programme before a visit.
