Ermita de San Buenaventura

Ermita de San Buenaventura is a small hilltop chapel above Alcudia de Guadix, in the municipality of Valle del Zalabí, Granada province.

Where is it located?

The hermitage sits on a hill overlooking Alcudia de Guadix, one of the four villages making up Valle del Zalabí, together with Exfiliana, Charches and La Rambla del Agua. The site has old strategic roots: a castle once stood here, and after it disappeared a cross was raised on the same hilltop.

What is the story behind it?

Around 1500, an outbreak known locally as "tabardillos" (a severe fever) struck Alcudia. Residents processed up to the hilltop cross to pray for the saint's intercession, and according to local tradition the epidemic subsided soon after — an event remembered as miraculous and the reason San Buenaventura was declared patron saint of Alcudia. The chapel itself, however, was not built until 1920; Rafael Varón Fernández is credited with bringing the first cartload of stone for its construction. The building was restored in 2002, and the renovated hermitage was blessed and reopened on 14 July that year, timed to the saint's procession reaching the hilltop.
