What is the story behind the building?

The building exists thanks to the will of Imeldo Serís-Granier y Blanco, Marquis of Villasegura, who died in 1904. He left the city 100,000 pesetas to fund an institution with a charitable, welfare, or educational purpose, plus an additional 50,000 pesetas for furnishing the interior. Construction began in 1909 under architect Manuel de Cámara y Cruz, but rising material costs and a shortage of funds brought the project to a standstill. In 1922 the executors of the will handed the property over to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, which committed to finishing the work and keeping the building dedicated to education.

After de Cámara's death in 1928, architect Antonio Pintor took charge of the project and altered parts of the original plan — replacing the grand, multi-flight staircase with a simpler three-section one, and converting spaces originally meant for a museum and library into classrooms. The building was formally inaugurated on February 1, 1939, when the School of Nautical Science and the School of Commerce moved into its halls.
