Eddy Merckx Stele

Woluwe-Saint-Pierre - Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, Belgium

About this place

The Eddy Merckx Stele is a memorial to Belgium's most celebrated cyclist, standing in the Chant d'Oiseau area of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre (Sint-Pieters-Woluwe in Dutch), one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region. It is a short but meaningful stop for cycling fans and for walkers exploring the calmer, residential side of the Belgian capital.

What is the monument?

The stele honours Eddy Merckx, widely regarded as one of the greatest cyclists in history. The sculpture was created by Belgian artist Stefaan De Croock and unveiled in 2019, during the Tour de France Grand Départ in Brussels, with many dignitaries present, including Merckx himself. It stands near place des Bouvreuils, a square now also associated with the rider's name.

Why here?

The location is no coincidence. Merckx grew up in this neighbourhood, and his parents ran a grocery shop nearby. The monument brings the champion back to his roots: he was born in 1945 in Meensel-Kiezegem and later made his life around Brussels.

Who was Eddy Merckx?

Merckx earned the nickname "The Cannibal" for his relentless hunger for victory. In the 1960s and 1970s he won the Tour de France five times and the Giro d'Italia five times, took the world championship and won many of the biggest one-day classics. In 1972 he set the world hour record in Mexico City. For Belgians he remains the yardstick against which every later generation of riders is measured.

Has the monument been damaged?

Local media, including L'Avenir and BX1, reported in May 2026 that the stele had been vandalised and the cyclist figure's head torn off. Mayor Benoît Cerexhe announced a criminal complaint against unknown persons, analysis of surveillance footage and a commitment to restore the work as quickly as possible. Before visiting, check whether the restoration has been completed.
