Dománovický les

Dománovice, Czechia

About this place

Dománovický les is a nature reserve east of the village of Dománovice in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, covering 74.63 hectares at an elevation of 222 to 240 metres. The reserve protects a stretch of natural Hercynian oak-hornbeam forest, which makes up roughly 70% of the area, with the remainder consisting mainly of oak woodland. It is one of the more valuable forest complexes in the Kolín district, preserved in a near-natural state and home to a striking number of rare and protected plant and animal species.

When was the reserve established?

Dománovický les was declared a nature reserve on 15 December 1988, with protection taking effect on 1 January 1989. Since then the site has been managed by the Regional Authority of the Central Bohemian Region, which oversees the preservation of its natural character and biodiversity.

What makes this forest ecologically important?

The reserve's greatest asset is its well-preserved natural oak-hornbeam forest structure, a rarity in this condition elsewhere in the Czech Republic. This environment supports numerous orchid and butterfly species, making the site a significant point on the region's nature conservation map. Among its most valuable species is the lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus), a protected orchid recognisable by its slipper-shaped flower, whose population here is considered one of the stronger ones in the region.

The reserve is also a stronghold for insects of high conservation value. Visitors' chances of spotting the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) — the largest beetle in Central Europe, whose larvae develop in the decaying wood of old oak trees — are notably good here. An even rarer resident is the scarce fritillary (Euphydryas maturna), a butterfly for which Dománovický les is the only known site in the entire Czech Republic. This fact alone elevates what might otherwise look like an ordinary woodland to a site of national importance for biodiversity conservation.

Why was the area given European protection status?

In 2005, the reserve's territory was incorporated into a larger protected complex under the Natura 2000 network, designated as a Site of Community Importance (EVL) bearing the same name — Dománovický les. This site spans elevations of 224 to 269 metres across 354.89 hectares, split into two separate areas. Its inclusion in Natura 2000 confirms that the unique forest communities here, along with the populations of the lady's slipper orchid, stag beetle, and scarce fritillary, carry significance beyond Czech borders and warrant protection at the European level.

How to get there and what to know before visiting

Dománovický les lies east of the village of Dománovice in the Kolín district, easily reached from the neighbouring settlements of Radovesnice II, Choťovice, and Končice, all of which fall within the boundaries of the associated Natura 2000 site. Because of its nature reserve status, typical restrictions for protected areas apply here — visitors are encouraged to stick to marked paths and avoid collecting plants or disturbing wildlife, so as not to upset the delicate balance of an ecosystem that shelters species found nowhere else in the country.

Frequently asked questions

Can visitors walk freely through the forest? The site holds nature reserve status, so it is recommended to stay on marked trails and follow the conservation rules that apply to protected areas of this kind.

What is the forest's biggest natural attraction? It is the only known Czech site of the scarce fritillary butterfly, along with a strong population of the protected lady's slipper orchid.

Since when has the area been protected? Nature reserve status has applied since 1 January 1989, and since 2005 the site has also formed part of a larger Natura 2000 area.

How large is the reserve? The nature reserve itself covers 74.63 hectares, while the associated Natura 2000 site spans 354.89 hectares across two separate sections.
