Divadlo (natural monument)

Břevniště, Czechia

About this place

Divadlo is a natural monument formed by a sandstone rock ridge on the Ralská Pahorkatina plateau in the Česká Lípa district of northern Bohemia, a few kilometres from the village of Hamr na Jezeře. Its name, meaning "Theatre" in Czech, comes from the ridge's distinctive shape, which resembles an ancient amphitheatre when viewed from above.

Where exactly is Divadlo located?

The protected site lies roughly three kilometres southeast of Hamr na Jezeře, within the area of the former Ralsko military training ground. The rocks rise about 200 metres southeast of the Široký kámen hill, at an elevation of 365 to 394 metres above sea level. Because the surrounding land served military purposes for decades, this part of the Ralská Pahorkatina remained largely closed to visitors and relatively untouched.

What does the rock ridge look like?

Divadlo consists of a split, horseshoe-shaped rock ridge made up of numerous individual formations, each with its own name — including Švarcvaldská brána, Palice, Štěničník, Štětináč, Velbloud and Velbloudice. It is precisely this arrangement, resembling the seating and stage of an ancient theatre, that gave the monument its name. The rock towers are separated by narrow passages and gate-like openings, with informal paths winding between the formations.

What rock features can visitors see?

The sandstone walls of Divadlo bear the marks of centuries of wind and water erosion. Visitors can find rock towers, gates, windows, niches and cavities, as well as rock ledges, weathering pans, limonite crusts and honeycomb weathering — small, net-like depressions that form on sandstone surfaces through uneven erosion. This variety of features makes Divadlo a notable example of the sandstone rock scenery characteristic of northern Bohemia.

How old are these rocks?

The sandstones that make up Divadlo formed approximately 90 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. They were deposited on the floor of the Cretaceous sea that once covered much of what is now the Czech Republic, before later tectonic uplift and long-term erosion gradually exposed and sculpted the rock formations seen today.

Why is Divadlo worth visiting?

Divadlo appeals to geology enthusiasts and nature photographers drawn to quiet, lesser-visited corners of the Ralská Pahorkatina. Its unusual horseshoe layout, combined with a rich variety of erosional features — towers, gates and hollows — makes it one of the more distinctive, if still relatively little-known, natural monuments in the Česká Lípa region.
