Desinić

Desinić, Croatia

About this place

Desinić is a village in northern Croatia, in Krapina-Zagorje County, and the seat of the municipality of the same name. The 2011 census recorded 367 residents, so this is a small, quiet place. For visitors it is mainly the starting point for one of the best-known castles in the Zagorje region.

Where is Desinić?

The village lies in Zagorje, the hilly part of Croatia north of Zagreb and close to the Slovenian border, at roughly 46.14° N, 15.66° E. The castle in the Desinić area sits about 8 km west of Pregrada, which makes it easy to fit into a day trip through this part of the county.

What is there to see around Desinić?

The main draw is Veliki Tabor Castle, with the museum address Košnički Hum 1, 49216 Desinić. The state owns the site and runs it as a museum and tourist attraction. Some sources trace the earliest walls and foundations to the 12th century, while the current form, with its pentagonal towers and walled inner courtyard, dates from the early 16th century. Other accounts place the oldest part in the mid-15th century, so dating varies depending on who you read.

For centuries the castle belonged to the noble Rattkay (Ratkaj) family, from the 16th century until 1793. Between 1927 and 1935 the painter Oton Iveković, who owned it for a time, depicted the castle and its surroundings in his work.

The legend of Veronika of Desinić

The best-known story concerns Veronika Desinić, a young woman who, according to tradition, was put to death in the 15th century over a forbidden romance with the son of the castle's lord. The legend says she was walled up inside the fortress, and in winter her cries can supposedly still be heard. A skull linked to the tale is displayed in the castle chapel and is one of the museum's most unusual exhibits.

What else is inside?

  • a well about 31 metres deep,
  • a former wine cellar, where the tour ends and visitors can taste local wine,
  • a collection of historic bladed weapons,
  • exhibitions on ethnography, swords and armour, paintings, pottery, old vehicles and the Ratkaj family.

Who is it for?

Desinić suits travellers who enjoy history, legends and calm rural scenery. It works well as a stop on a tour of Zagorje, especially combined with other castles in the region.
