About this place
Dehetník
Dehetník is a small nature monument located about 900 meters northwest of the village of Líšnice u Sepekova, in the Písek district of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The site protects a wet meadow together with an overgrown pond that serves as an important habitat for amphibians and wetland vegetation. The protected area was established in December 1985 and covers just over one hectare, surrounded by an additional buffer zone.
What can you find at Dehetník?
The heart of the reserve is a damp meadow dominated by sedge and reed vegetation, a habitat type that has become increasingly rare across the region as agricultural land has been drained over the decades. Several protected plant species grow within the reserve, including bogbean, sedge, and speedwell. The pond at the center of the site functions as a refuge for amphibians — fire-bellied toads and pool frogs can be found here, along with a number of bird species associated with wetland environments.
Why was this site protected?
Wet meadows with sedge-reed vegetation and small ponds were once a common feature of the South Bohemian agricultural landscape, but today survive in only a handful of places, most having been drained or converted into farmland and intensively managed grassland. Dehetník is one such surviving fragment of that older landscape, which is why it was given formal legal protection back in the 1980s. Despite its modest size — just over a hectare of core area plus a protective buffer — the reserve preserves the essential ecological qualities of this vanishing habitat type without requiring changes to the surrounding farmland.
How to get to Dehetník?
The site is freely accessible and lies along the "Kolem Milevska" (Around Milevsko) educational trail, which follows a dirt track from the town of Milevsko toward the village of Líšnice. This makes Dehetník an easy destination for a short walk for anyone visiting the Milevsko area, which is also home to a notable Premonstratensian monastery, one of the region's most significant historic landmarks. The route runs mostly along unpaved farm and field tracks, suitable for both walkers and cyclists.
