About this place
Boukal is a small but ecologically significant wetland reserve located about 2 km northwest of Milevsko, within the cadastral territory of Něžovice, close to Zbelítov. At its core lies a forest pond of the same name, ringed by extensive reed beds and sedge stands, which has held protected natural monument status since 1985.
Why was this pond protected?
Boukal earned its protected status largely because of the presence of the yellow-bellied toad, an amphibian that depends on clean, undisturbed water bodies with rich shoreline vegetation. Thanks to this population, along with other protected plant and animal species found here, the site was designated a Site of Community Importance under the Natura 2000 network in 2004.
How has the reserve's area changed?
Originally, the natural monument covered only the Boukal pond itself, an area of 4.61 hectares. In 2011 the protected zone was expanded to include the neighboring Slatina pond and the adjoining wetland meadows. This expansion nearly doubled the reserve's total area, bringing it to 8.11 hectares. The two ponds are not isolated from one another — they are connected by a stream, with Boukal situated upstream and Slatina lying downstream within the same hydrological system.
What can you find here?
The combined ecosystem of both ponds and the surrounding wetlands supports remarkable biodiversity. Waterbirds nest and forage among the reeds and along the water's edge, including the marsh harrier and the little grebe — species whose presence points to a stable, high-quality habitat. Equally notable is the amphibian population: alongside the yellow-bellied toad, several other species tied to wet meadows and pond margins live within the reserve.
Who is this place for?
Boukal is a destination for nature observers rather than a conventional tourist attraction with visitor infrastructure or scenic overlooks. Its value lies in a well-preserved pond-and-wetland ecosystem, not in recreational amenities. It makes a fitting addition to a trip around Milevsko for anyone interested in birdwatching, amphibians, or simply a quiet walk among water and reeds, away from the crowds.
