About this place
De Weikes is a nature reserve located in Dworp, a village within the municipality of Beersel in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. Covering 11.2 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve in the surrounding area. Locally, people simply call it "De Weikes," meaning "the meadows" — a name that reflects the grassy character of the valley through which its stream flows.
What can you find in the reserve?
De Weikes is mainly a wet woodland area, crossed by the Steenputbeek, a stream that originates further south in the Hallerbos (Halle Forest). The water in the stream is exceptionally clean, allowing species with high water-quality requirements to survive here. Among them are the brook lamprey and the bullhead, both species whose habitats are protected under European Union guidelines.
Who manages the area?
Like most of the natural areas in the municipality of Beersel, with the exception of the "Duling" reserve, De Weikes is owned by Natuurpunt, a Belgian nature conservation organization. The land was acquired with financial support from the municipality of Beersel, as well as the Flemish Region and the province of Flemish Brabant. Thanks to this joint effort, the largest of the local nature reserves could be secured for conservation.
What is the history behind this place?
The beauty of this valley has been appreciated for a long time. It is said that the Flemish writer Hendrik Conscience passed through this landscape during his walks from Halle to Beersel and took note of its scenic qualities. A walking trail named after him, the Conscience Wandelpad, still runs through the area today, passing near the Steenputbeek valley and connecting Halle, Dworp and Beersel.
Why is it worth visiting?
De Weikes is a good destination for anyone looking for a quiet encounter with nature, away from the bustle of larger towns. A walk along the stream offers views of the lush vegetation typical of wet woodland, and with a bit of patience, visitors may notice signs of the rare aquatic species living there. It makes a pleasant stop for hikers planning a longer route between Halle and Beersel, as well as for local residents looking for a short, calming walk.
