About this place
De Brielmeersen is a provincial recreation domain covering roughly 27 hectares right in the center of Deinze, nestled between the Leie River and the Schipdonk Canal. It ranks among the most popular leisure destinations in this part of East Flanders, drawing large numbers of families with young children throughout the year.
How the park came to be
The municipality of Deinze acquired the land in 1971, and work soon began to transform the area into a public recreation site. In 1975, a small petting zoo opened on the grounds, a feature that has remained a favorite with young visitors ever since. Since January 2015, management of the domain has been handed over to the province of East Flanders, which has continued to develop the infrastructure and maintain the extensive green spaces.
What there is to see and do
The park packs a surprising number of attractions into an easy afternoon visit. Charming footpaths wind alongside decorative ponds, while a dedicated sunbathing lawn and a fit-o-meter trail with outdoor exercise equipment cater to visitors looking to stay active. A "school forest" area is used for nature education programs aimed at children, introducing them to the local ecosystem in a hands-on way. The domain also includes a swamp biotope, a wetland habitat that supports a richer variety of plant and animal life than the surrounding manicured lawns.
Water lovers will find a small yacht basin connected to the nearby Leie, making De Brielmeersen a natural stopping point for boaters exploring the regional waterways. Sports fields round out the offering, used regularly by both Deinze residents and visitors from neighboring towns.
Who is it for
De Brielmeersen is above all a family destination. Its open lawns, walking paths, and the presence of the petting zoo make it an easy choice for a relaxed stroll with children, a picnic, or simply an afternoon outdoors — all while remaining within easy reach of the town center of Deinze.
