Daska

Daska is the highest point of the Podgradinsko-Slivanjska hills, rising above the area around Zavala in the Croatian part of the Neretva delta. The summit reaches 561 m above sea level and serves as a natural landmark for the whole Slivno peninsula, which separates the river valley from the Adriatic Sea.

Where is Daska located?

The hill sits in a karst landscape stretching between the Neretva valley to the north and the Adriatic coast to the west. The region borders Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast, and the surrounding area is fed by the Mala Neretva river and the Mislina, which flows into nearby Lake Kuti. Zavala itself acts as the southern gateway to the peninsula, and most hikes into the hills start from there.

The whole area belongs to the so-called Lower Neretva Landscape, a protected zone valued for its combination of Mediterranean, karst and delta features. For visitors this translates into dry, stony slopes covered with maquis scrub, cut through by strips of green vegetation following the watercourses.

How do you get to the summit?

The most commonly used route to Daska follows a forest firebreak track starting near Brštanik, a small settlement above Opuzen. The path climbs the northeastern ridge around Rkalovac before gradually reaching the highest point of the range. It's a typical karst ascent — little shade for most of the way, but with recurring open views over the Neretva valley.

Bring water before setting out, since there are no reliable sources along the way and the stony ground heats up quickly in summer. Hikers starting from Zavala should expect a longer but more varied approach across saddle terrain.
