Cultural and Scientific Center "Milutin Milanković"

Dalj, Croatia

About this place

The Cultural and Scientific Center "Milutin Milanković" is a public cultural and educational institution in Dalj, a small village in eastern Croatia on the Danube. It occupies the house where one of the twentieth century's most celebrated Serbian scientists was born, and it is dedicated to keeping his legacy alive.

Who was Milutin Milanković?

Milutin Milanković was born in Dalj in 1879. He was a mathematician, astronomer, climatologist, geophysicist, civil engineer and popularizer of science. He studied in Vienna and later built his career in Belgrade, where he taught at the university. He died in 1958.

He is best known for a theory explaining long-term climate change on Earth through regular variations in the planet's movement around the Sun: the shape of its orbit, the tilt of its axis and its precession. These variations are now called Milankovitch cycles, and scientists still use them to study ice ages. His principal work, the "Canon of Insolation of the Earth", describes how much solar energy reaches different latitudes.

What does the center do?

The institution was established in 2009. Its core mission is to present Milanković's life and work, but its scope is wider. It organizes cultural events and exhibitions, publishes books and produces audiovisual and promotional materials, preserves the traditional heritage of the region, hosts cultural and scientific meetings, promotes sustainable development and popularizes science.

The building holds a permanent museum exhibition about the scientist, including a copy of his "Canon of Insolation of the Earth". Plans also included a space-themed room with a model of the precession cycle and a large telescope in the yard in front of the house.

Who is it for?

It suits anyone interested in the history of science, astronomy or climate, as well as travelers following the Croatian stretch of the Danube who want something beyond the usual sights. No scientific background is needed: the story of a man who calculated the climates of past ages from his study is easy to follow. In 2012 the center welcomed more than 5,000 visitors.

Nearby, in Dalj's Orthodox cemetery, is Milanković's grave, which makes the village a natural stop for anyone following his biography.
