Configuracions Urbanes: Crescendo appare is a public art installation on the Barceloneta pier in Barcelona — a line of illuminated numbers set into the pavement that turns a seaside walkway into a mathematical puzzle underfoot.

What is this place?

The work was created by Italian artist Mario Merz, a leading figure of the Arte Povera movement. It forms part of "Configuracions Urbanes," a set of public art installations commissioned for the Cultural Olympiad that accompanied the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The piece was unveiled on 21 July 1992, just days before the opening ceremony.

You'll find it on the Moll de la Barceloneta (Barceloneta pier), near Plaça Pau Vila and Carrer Almirante Cervera — right along the route connecting Port Vell with the Barceloneta beaches.

What will you see?

Along roughly 160 metres of pavement, 21 glass-and-metal boxes hold neon-lit numbers. The sequence isn't random — it's the Fibonacci sequence, the famous mathematical pattern in which each number equals the sum of the two before it. The boxes are spaced progressively farther apart, visually mirroring how the sequence grows: the further you walk, the wider the gaps between the numbers become.

The title, "Crescendo appare" ("growing, it appears"), points directly at this gradual, mathematical growth — a theme Merz returned to throughout his career, often using the Fibonacci sequence as a symbol of natural, organic expansion.

In 2004 the installation underwent a full renovation: the numbers, the electrical wiring, and the protective glass (now thicker) were all replaced. Over time, though, parts of the lighting have stopped working again, and some panels have lost their original brightness. Today it reads more as a quiet, slightly overlooked piece of the streetscape than a flashy light show — but the numbered boxes are still there to spot as you walk the length of the pier.

The Moll de la Barceloneta is a short walk from Barceloneta metro station (L4 line) — just a few minutes on foot. It sits naturally along the path between Port Vell (with its aquarium and marinas) and the beaches of the Barceloneta neighbourhood, so it's easy to fold into a longer waterfront stroll.

When should you visit?

The numbers show up best after dark, when the neon glow (where it's still working) stands out against the dark paving of the pier. During the day the installation is far more discreet — easy to walk right past without noticing — so it helps to know what you're looking for.
