About this place
The City Hall of Sint-Niklaas is a neo-Gothic building standing on the Grote Markt, the central square of this Belgian city in East Flanders. The current structure is the third building to serve as the town's administrative seat on this spot, and for over a century it has remained one of the most recognizable landmarks of Sint-Niklaas.
What is the history behind this building?
The city's first town hall, known today as the Parochiehuis, was built in 1663. Over time it could no longer meet the needs of the growing municipal administration, so in the 19th century officials decided to build a new seat on the northwestern side of the market square, on land previously used as a park. A neoclassical building had stood there before, but it burned down on 26 February 1874. In its place the present, imposing neo-Gothic city hall was constructed between 1876 and 1878, designed by architect Pieter Van Kerkhove.
Who designed the city hall and in what style?
The building was designed by architect Pieter Van Kerkhove in the neo-Gothic style, drawing on the tradition of Flemish civic architecture. Its striking façade is built from white Gobertange stone, a material characteristic of prestigious buildings in this part of Belgium.
What makes the building's architecture distinctive?
The most defining feature of the city hall is its roughly 40-meter-high belfry tower. In 1904, to mark the hundredth anniversary of the city's charter, the tower was fitted with a carillon of 49 bells, cast by the Leuven bell-founder Felix Van Aerschodt. The entrance is flanked by grand staircases guarded by four stone lions bearing the city's coat of arms, carved by sculptor Frans Van Havermaet.
What can visitors see inside?
The interior walls are decorated with polychrome murals in the neo-Gothic style. The building also houses part of the city's art collection, including sculptures, paintings, and engravings, making it not only the seat of local administration but also a place of cultural significance for the residents of Sint-Niklaas.
Why is the city hall worth visiting?
The building stands on the Grote Markt, considered one of the largest market squares in Belgium, which underscores its representative character. The combination of neo-Gothic architecture, rich sculptural decoration, and the historic carillon makes the city hall an essential stop for anyone interested in Belgian architecture and the history of local government.
