Cime di Val Loga

Cime di Val Loga is a group of three peaks in the Lepontine Alps, rising on the Italy–Switzerland border above Madesimo. They belong to the Adula Alps subgroup and form one of the distinctive high-altitude landmarks of the Splügen Pass area.

The Cime di Val Loga consist of three summits: Meridionale (3,003 m), Centrale (3,004 m), and Settentrionale (2,968 m). They stand on the border ridge between Italy (municipality of Madesimo) and Switzerland (municipality of Mesocco). The ridge is relatively gentle — the three peaks are not sharply defined, making the connecting traverse accessible to fit hikers without technical climbing gear. The Val Loga valley, which gives the peaks their name, descends toward the Splügen Pass below.

How do you get there?

The standard starting point is Montespluga (1,908 m), a small village at the Splügen Pass reachable via road SP7 from Madesimo toward the Swiss border. The route follows the Val Loga valley before gaining the border ridge, with a total elevation gain of approximately 1,300 m.

At 2,773 m stands the Bivacco Val Loga — a small emergency bivouac shelter west of the summits. It marks a key waypoint on the route and provides emergency refuge if conditions deteriorate. The ridge crossing at Bocchetta del Ferré (2,721 m) connects the Italian and Swiss sides of the massif.

What will you see?

From the Cima Centrale (3,004 m), the highest of the three summits, views extend across the Adula Alps, the Mesocco valley on the Swiss side, and the Splügen valley on the Italian side. When to visit?

Cime di Val Loga draw visitors in two distinct seasons. In summer (July to September) the upper terrain is accessible without snow equipment, though high-altitude weather at 3,000 m can change quickly. Early autumn typically brings stable conditions with less traffic than peak July.

Winter and early spring (January to April) belong to ski mountaineers. The route from Montespluga is an established ski touring circuit in the Madesimo area, valued for its moderate technical grade and reliable snow cover. It attracts backcountry skiers as a natural extension of the resorts and prepared slopes nearby.
