About this place
Kostelíček — the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Hranice stands on the eastern edge of the town, at the foot of Hůrka hill, and has drawn pilgrims from across Moravia for centuries.
Where does the name Kostelíček come from?
Local tradition credits the church's founding to Jiří, a monk from the Rajhrad monastery and the legendary founder of Hranice, who died in 1209. That story has no documentary backing - the first reliable written record of the church dates only to 1492. In 1595 the original building was replaced by a larger structure that still forms the core of what stands today, and a sacristy was added in 1781.
What will you see inside and around the church?
Kostelíček is a late Gothic, single-nave building with a polygonal chancel. Its most precious feature is a Gothic statue of Our Lady of Hranice - a limewood carving 114 cm tall, made in the second half of the 15th century and venerated as miraculous.
The church itself is only part of a larger complex: a walled cemetery ringed by fourteen Stations of the Cross chapels, a late-Renaissance entrance gate, an early Baroque chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, and a chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Taken together, the site feels less like a single parish church and more like a small sanctuary.
Why is this a pilgrimage site?
Kostelíček has served as a local center of Marian devotion since the 17th century. Our Lady of Hranice is venerated here, and worshippers from surrounding villages have gathered at fixed dates in the liturgical calendar for generations.
Why was the building in danger of collapse?
In the second half of the 20th century, limestone quarrying near the site undermined the church's foundations and destabilized its walls. A general reconstruction carried out in 1987-1988 tied the whole structure together with steel cables to stop the cracking from spreading further. That intervention is the reason the building can still be visited today.
How do you get there, and when should you visit?
Kostelíček sits on the eastern edge of Hranice, an easy walk or bike ride from the town center. The church is not open on a regular schedule - access is described as occasional: services are held only a few times a year, and otherwise the church can be seen during guided tours held on specific announced dates, usually in the afternoon. Check the local events calendar before visiting rather than expecting the doors to be open on a whim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the church open every day? No. Access is limited - services take place just a few times a year, and visits mostly happen through organized guided tours on set dates.
What is the most valuable object inside? A Gothic limewood statue of Our Lady of Hranice from the second half of the 15th century, 114 cm tall, venerated as miraculous.
Why is it called "Kostelíček" (Little Church) if the complex is this large? It's a local, affectionate nickname that distinguishes it from the bigger parish churches in downtown Hranice - even though the walled complex, with its gate and fourteen chapels, is anything but small.
Was the church ever at risk of being lost? Yes. Nearby limestone quarrying weakened its structure so badly that a general repair in 1987-1988 was needed, tying the walls together with steel cables.
