Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Klokoty)
About this place
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Klokoty anchors one of South Bohemia's most important pilgrimage sites — a Baroque church-and-cloister complex crowning a hill just outside Tábor, in the district that shares its name. Only a short walk from Tábor's main square, Klokoty has followed its own centuries-old rhythm of Marian feasts and pilgrimages ever since the Middle Ages.
Where does the Klokoty pilgrimage tradition come from?
People have gathered on this hill since at least the 13th century, when a small fortress belonging to the knight Vítek of Klokoty stood here alongside a modest chapel. The first written record of the church itself dates to 1361, tied to a local parish priest named Bolech, while its dedication to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is documented from 1389. A local legend, still told today, holds that around this time the Madonna appeared to shepherd children — and later to other villagers — in the form of a beautiful young woman, taught them about God, and was then carried up to heaven by angels before their eyes. That story is credited as the root of the Marian devotion that has drawn pilgrims to Klokoty ever since.
How did a modest chapel become a Baroque sanctuary?
The Hussite wars left the church badly damaged, and it was rebuilt in 1440 with support from a Tábor burgher named Petr Růže. The real transformation came at the close of the 17th century, when the town of Tábor handed Klokoty over to Benedictine monks from the Montserrat congregation. Their superior, Father Diego di Convero, launched an ambitious rebuilding campaign in 1701; the church reached its present form by 1714, and the surrounding cloisters with their corner chapels were finished by 1730. The design is sometimes linked to circles around the architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, though his authorship has never been firmly confirmed. Notably, the Benedictines were removed from the site while work was still underway, and it was largely donations from Tábor burghers and noble families that saw the project through to completion. The result is an unusually shaped complex, laid out like a double cross, with a nave, two side chapels, and covered cloister walks tying the whole ensemble together.
What is inside the church?
At the heart of the interior hangs the miracle-working painting of Our Lady of Klokoty, an early Baroque work from 1636 attributed to the workshop of the Prague painter Johann Andreas Burger. Just as striking are the ceiling frescoes by Franz Laukas of Prutz: five large scenes from the life of Mary, eight smaller Marian images, and six further scenes retelling the legend of the apparition, all framed by delicate stucco work.
What does the sanctuary's life look like today?
The main annual pilgrimage takes place on the Saturday closest to 15 August, the feast of the Assumption. Even under communist rule, when the pilgrimage tradition was actively discouraged, eight new bells were hung at Klokoty in 1980 — the church now has eleven in total. Since 1994, pastoral care of the sanctuary has been entrusted to the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The whole complex was listed as a protected cultural monument back in 1963, and in 2018 it was elevated to the status of a National Cultural Monument.
