Church of the Assumption of Mary

Osor, Croatia

About this place

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Osor is a Renaissance basilica in the centre of the small town of Osor, on the narrow strip between the islands of Cres and Lošinj in Croatia. For centuries it served as the cathedral of the Osor bishopric, and today it remains one of the most important historic buildings in the northern Adriatic.

Where is the Osor cathedral?

Osor sits where a narrow channel separates Cres from Lošinj. The church stands on the town's main square, surrounded by stone houses and remnants of the old walls. The historic centre is tiny, so from anywhere in town you can walk to the church in a few minutes.

What is the history of the bishopric?

The Osor bishopric (Latin Absorus) was founded around the year 600, possibly as early as the 6th century. From 1146 it was a suffragan of the metropolitan see of Zadar. The diocese was finally abolished in 1828 and merged into the Diocese of Krk. Today the building is a parish co-cathedral and former cathedral within the Diocese of Krk.

When was the present church built?

Construction ran from 1463 to around 1498, and the builders remain unknown. Sources give different completion dates, most often 1497 or 1498. The church is Renaissance in style with some Gothic elements. Its construction was tied to the transfer of local government to the town of Cres, which left the older church of St Isidore in Osor too small for the needs of the growing community. A twin church, St Mary the Great, was built in Cres. Because of the urgency there, it was finished a few years before the one in Osor, even though work in Osor had started earlier.

What can you see inside and outside?

The bell tower dates from 1575 and is attributed to the renowned master Jakov Galet of the island of Krk (some sources spell the name Galeto). The main altar is Baroque and holds a 17th-century painting of the Assumption of Mary, which gives the church its name. The interior has the plain, bright architecture typical of Renaissance basilicas on the Adriatic.

Are concerts held in the cathedral?

Yes. Since 1976 the church has doubled as a concert hall for the Osor Musical Evenings, a summer classical music festival. The stone interior has good acoustics, and summer evenings draw both locals and visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same church as the one in Cres? No. The town of Cres has a twin building, the church of St Mary the Great. The Osor cathedral is a separate building dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

Is the church still in use? Yes, it is a parish church with regular services. When visiting, keep quiet and respect worshippers.

How long does a visit take? The interior takes a quarter of an hour, but it is worth setting aside an hour to stroll around Osor, its sculptures and the remains of its ancient and medieval buildings.

How do I get to Osor? A road leads to the town from both Cres and Lošinj, and a movable bridge over the channel links the two islands. Park at the edge of the town and continue on foot.

When is the best time to visit? Summer, when the music festival takes place. Outside the season the town is quieter and sightseeing is more relaxed.
