Church of Santa Maria Madalena

Ponta do Sol, Portugal

About this place

Church of Santa Maria Madalena (Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena) stands in Madalena do Mar, in the municipality of Ponta do Sol on the south coast of Madeira. This parish church dates to the late 16th century and combines a Mannerist structure with a Baroque interior.

Where is the church?

The church lies in the parish of Madalena do Mar, part of the municipality of Ponta do Sol in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, at roughly 32.7016° N, 17.1338° W. Madalena do Mar is a small coastal village, and the church is its most important religious landmark and a natural point of reference for visitors.

When and by whom was it built?

The church goes back to 1582. It was raised on the site of an earlier hermitage. The builder was Henrique Alemão, a knight of the Order of Saint Catherine. According to local legend, this name concealed Ladislaus IV, King of Poland. That is a popular tradition rather than a confirmed historical fact, yet it gives the place particular interest for Polish visitors.

Later work followed in the 18th century, when the galleries and altars were added. In 1950 the nave received azulejos, the traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles, and the square in front of the church was paved in stone.

What does the church look like?

The building is Mannerist, with a longitudinal plan and a single nave. The gabled façade has a cornice, a round-arched portal and one window. Inside, the stonework of the triumphal arch, a side chapel and carved Baroque retables (richly decorated altarpieces) stand out. The contrast between the plain exterior and the carved interior decoration is typical of many churches in Madeira.

The tilework in the nave also draws attention. The ceramic tiles cover the walls and give the interior a bright look characteristic of Portugal.

Heritage status

Since 29 September 1977 the church has held the status of Immovable Cultural Heritage of Municipal Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Municipal). The protection covers the building and its historic furnishings.

What to know before visiting

The church is an active parish church, so visitors should keep quiet and respect services. Opening hours may depend on the parish's liturgical calendar, so it is best to ask locally. Madalena do Mar lies close to the town of Ponta do Sol, which makes it easy to combine the visit with a walk around the area and with other villages along the south coast.
