About this place
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Rančířov is a Gothic parish church standing on the northeastern edge of the village of Rančířov, in the Vysočina Region a short distance from Jihlava. Built on a Romanesque core and reshaped by later Baroque work, the church is today protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
How to get there?
Rančířov sits close to Jihlava, one of the larger towns in the Vysočina Region, making the church an easy addition to a day trip around the area. The building stands at the edge of the village, enclosed within a walled cemetery, which makes it easy to spot even for visitors unfamiliar with the village layout.
What is the history behind the church?
Sources disagree on exactly when the church was built — some point to the second half of the 13th century, others to the 1430s, while a date of 1400 is inscribed inside the building itself. Whatever the precise starting point, the original structure was a single-nave building with Romanesque features.
From 1305 to 1530, the church was under the patronage of Premonstratensian canons from the monastery in Geras, Austria — a common arrangement for rural parishes of the period, where pastoral and property oversight fell to religious orders based outside the region. In 1530, patronage passed to the town of Jihlava, tying the church more closely to the nearby urban center.
A significant rebuilding took place in the 1440s. The original chancel was demolished and replaced with a new one, and a sacristy was added on the northern side of the church. Around the same time, a Chapel of the Three Kings was also added, expanding the building's functional layout. Another difficult chapter came in 1662, when the church suffered serious damage; only part of it was repaired afterward, suggesting the parish's limited resources at the time.
What can you see on site?
The church stands at the center of a walled cemetery grounds, accessed through two Baroque gates — these, alongside the church itself, are among the more notable architectural features of the site. Nearby stand an 18th-century wayside shrine and a stone memorial, both adding to the historic character of the surroundings.
The building itself, blending its Gothic form with a Romanesque core and Baroque additions from later repairs, offers a good example of the layered sacred architecture typical of villages in the Vysočina Region, where successive generations extended and rebuilt their parish church according to the needs and resources of their time.
When should you visit?
As a small village parish church, it is best visited as part of a broader trip through the area around Jihlava, combined with other sights of the Vysočina Region. The cemetery grounds and the roadside shrine make for a quiet, reflective stop regardless of the season.
