Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius

Praga, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Nebušice is a small Roman Catholic parish church standing right in the middle of the village of Nebušice, on the northwestern edge of Prague, within the administrative district of Prague 6. It has nothing to do with the Orthodox cathedral of the same dedication on Resslova Street in the New Town, or with the large Roman Catholic church of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Karlínské náměstí — Nebušice sits far from the tourist center, and this church is a modest, village-scale building.

When was the church built?

The church was constructed between 1885 and 1886. Before then, the residents of Nebušice, who fell under the pastoral care of Strahov Monastery, had to travel to distant churches to attend Mass — including the Church of St. John of Nepomuk in Prague's Šárka area (Dejvice). As the village's population grew, this arrangement became increasingly impractical, which eventually led to the decision to build a church directly in Nebušice. An independent parish was established shortly after construction was completed.

What architectural style did the builders choose?

The building follows the Neo-Romanesque style, widely used in Czech ecclesiastical architecture in the late 19th century. It is a single-nave church with a polygonal presbytery on the eastern end. On the western side stands a square-plan tower housing two bells — one dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the other to St. John of Nepomuk — along with a smaller memento mori bell. The main entrance faces south, and a rectory building stands next to the church.

What can visitors see inside?

The interior furnishings date from the time of construction and are executed in a pseudo-Romanesque style matching the building's architecture. The main altar is decorated with a sculptural group depicting the church's patrons, Saints Cyril and Methodius, accompanied by figures of St. Adalbert (Vojtěch) and St. Sigismund. Next to the side altar of the Virgin Mary stands a baptismal font carved from red marble. The organ loft holds an instrument built in 1886 by the respected Prague organ builder Karel Schiffner (1836–1894).

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands on Nebušická Street, in the northwestern part of the Prague 6-Nebušice district, essentially at the center of what was once an independent village and today remains one of Prague's more rural, peripheral neighborhoods. Its coordinates are approximately 50.1117°N, 14.3253°E.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same church as the one on Resslova Street or in Karlín? No. This is a third, separate church dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague. The cathedral on Resslova Street is an Orthodox church in the New Town, famous for the crypt where the paratroopers who assassinated Reinhard Heydrich hid. The church on Karlínské náměstí is a large 19th-century Roman Catholic building in Karlín. The Nebušice church is much smaller and stands at the opposite, peripheral end of the city.

When was the Nebušice church built? Between 1885 and 1886, in the Neo-Romanesque style.

Who built the organ? The organ dates from 1886 and was built by Prague organ maker Karel Schiffner.

Does the church still have an active parish? Yes, an independent Roman Catholic parish covering Nebušice was established shortly after the church was completed.

How do you get to the church? The church is located on Nebušická Street, in the center of the Prague 6-Nebušice district, on the northwestern edge of Prague — well away from the city's tourist center.
