About this place

Church of Saint Wenceslaus, Lomnice nad Lužnicí

The Church of Saint Wenceslaus stands on Wenceslaus Square in Lomnice nad Lužnicí, in the Jindřichův Hradec District of the South Bohemian Region. This Roman Catholic church grew out of a Gothic castle chapel founded in 1359, and it remains one of the last surviving traces of the medieval stronghold around which the town itself grew up.

Where did the church come from?

The chapel was founded in 1359 by Vilém the Younger of Landštejn, chancellor of the Kingdom of Bohemia, as part of the local castle. It was originally consecrated to Corpus Christi and to Saints Peter and Paul — only later, after wartime damage and reconstruction, did it take on the dedication to Saint Wenceslaus under which it still stands today.

How is the church tied to the old castle and the town?

Lomnice was founded by the Vítkovci family in the first half of the 13th century, and the settlement grew up alongside a so-called "blatný hrad" — a marsh castle, named for the wetlands that once surrounded the stronghold. From the outset, the chapel was an integral part of that fortified complex, standing on what is now Wenceslaus Square at the heart of the town. The castle itself did not survive: under Oldřich of Rožmberk, the fortress was torn down, reportedly in 1459, and the chapel was the only part of the complex left standing.

What survives from the Gothic building?

The 14th-century Gothic ground plan has been preserved to this day. Inside the presbytery, visitors can still see broken and parabolic cross vaults, reinforced by external buttresses. The church is single-naved with a polygonal east end and follows the traditional orientation, with the altar facing east. A sacristy was added to the south side of the presbytery, a common arrangement for small churches of this period.

How did the Thirty Years' War affect the building?

The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) left its mark on both the town of Lomnice and its small church, which suffered damage during the conflict. Once the fighting ended, the building was repaired and reconsecrated — this time under the patronage of Saint Wenceslaus, patron saint of Bohemia. It has carried that dedication ever since.

Why did local residents buy the church in the 18th century?

Under the Josephine reforms of Emperor Joseph II, many small, rarely used churches across the Habsburg monarchy faced closure or sale for secular use, and the Church of Saint Wenceslaus in Lomnice was among those marked for closure. To prevent this, the local community purchased the church at auction in 1787, together with its furnishings, taking it into a form of quiet, informal ownership. That decision is why the building survives to this day.

Why is it worth visiting?

The Church of Saint Wenceslaus is a rare example of a Gothic castle chapel that outlived the rest of the fortress it once belonged to. Standing today on Wenceslaus Square, it remains a living witness to the medieval origins of Lomnice nad Lužnicí and one of the few physical remnants of the Vítkovci family's marsh castle.
