About this place
The Church of Saint Vitus in Pelhřimov is the oldest sacred building in the town, consecrated as early as 1236, although the structure itself was likely built during the 13th century. The three-nave church, with its chancel facing east, stands on the site of the original settlement that preceded the town of Pelhřimov as it exists today, and over the centuries it changed function almost as often as the town's own history changed course.
What is the history behind the church?
The church originally served as Pelhřimov's first parish church. That changed around 1463, when the parish seat was moved to the nearby Church of Saint Bartholomew. From that point on, the Church of Saint Vitus became a cemetery chapel, a role it kept until 1787 - during this period a graveyard surrounded the building, and visitors entered through a gate in the enclosing wall. At various times the building also served as a filial church and even as a school (gymnasium) church.
How has the building's architecture changed over time?
The original Gothic structure, with its chancel closed by five sides of a regular octagon, was reshaped several times. In 1614 the church received a Renaissance makeover, including the distinctive sgraffito decoration still visible on its facades. A further Baroque rebuilding took place between 1739 and 1740: a sacristy was added, and the freestanding tower dating from 1575 was raised by one additional storey. That same tower, originally built as a bell tower, is topped with a large onion-shaped dome and lantern, and its facade features prominent corner rustication. During this same rebuilding phase, the gate in the wall of the former cemetery was converted into a separate Baroque bell tower, which still stands beside the church today.
What can visitors see at the church today?
The building no longer serves a liturgical purpose. It now houses an exhibition hall and gallery, and its interior is also used for ceremonial events and concerts. This keeps the church an active part of Pelhřimov's cultural life rather than a monument seen only from the outside.
Where is the church located?
The church stands in Pelhřimov, in the Vysočina Region on the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, close to the town's historic centre.
