About this place
Church of Saint Procopius is a Neo-Gothic church in Libušín, in the Kladno district of the Czech Republic, built at the turn of the 20th century during the peak of coal mining in the region.
Why was the church built here?
In the second half of the 19th century, the area around Libušín experienced rapid growth driven by coal mining. A village of roughly 500 people grew to more than 4,000 inhabitants within a few decades, with local schools eventually serving well over a thousand children. This booming mining community needed a parish of its own, so in January 1906 the town accepted building plans drawn up by architect Josef Mocker of Třeboň. Construction was assigned to local builder Josef Ullmann and began in May 1907. The finished church was solemnly consecrated on 5 November 1908 by the Archbishop of Prague, Cardinal Leo Skrbenský.
Why is the church dedicated to Saint Procopius?
The choice of patron saint reflects the town's identity at the time. Saint Procopius is traditionally venerated as the patron of miners, and coal mining was the main livelihood of Libušín and the surrounding villages when the church was built. Dedicating the new parish church to him made it the natural spiritual center for a community whose daily life revolved around the pits.
What does the building look like?
The church follows the Neo-Gothic style typical of Bohemian sacred architecture from that era. It measures about 40 meters in length, 16 meters in height, and 14 meters in width. Its relatively modest height for a Neo-Gothic building wasn't a stylistic choice but a safety one — the ground beneath Libušín was riddled with underground mine shafts, and frequent tremors from mining activity called for more restrained proportions to keep the structure from being damaged.
What is the church's status today?
The Church of Saint Procopius now serves as a filial church of the Roman Catholic parish centered on the Church of Saint Wenceslas in Kladno-Rozdělov. It is recognized as an important cultural monument of Libušín and remains an active place of worship, hosting regular services as well as events such as Night of Churches, when the building opens its doors to visitors and to audiences of sacred music concerts.
How do you get to the church in Libušín?
Libušín lies in the Kladno district, right next to the city of Kladno, which is well connected by road and bus to central Bohemia and Prague. The church stands in the central part of the village and its Neo-Gothic tower is visible from a distance, making it easy to find even without a precise address.
