Church of Saint Nicholas (Tvarožná)

Twarożna, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Tvarožná is a neo-Gothic parish church that has shaped the skyline of this small village in the Brno-venkov district of the South Moravian Region for more than 140 years. The current building stands on the site of a much older church, and although it is not itself medieval, its story stretches back to the early 14th century.

How old is the history of this site?

A Gothic church dedicated to the same saint first stood in Tvarožná as early as 1322. Over the following centuries the building was reworked more than once — a Baroque remodeling took place in 1700, followed by another round of changes in 1794. Despite these interventions, the structure gradually deteriorated and could no longer serve the growing parish community.

The decision to build a new church was made in the second half of the 19th century. The design was prepared by Brno architect August Prokop, and construction ran from 1880 to 1881. The new neo-Gothic church was blessed on October 9, 1881, but its formal consecration did not follow for decades — it finally took place in 1925. In the 20th century the building also underwent major repairs during the 1970s and 1980s.

Why is the church protected as a heritage monument?

The Church of Saint Nicholas is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Heritage protection covers the building's overall neo-Gothic form as well as its furnishings and immediate surroundings. The church continues to function as the parish church of Tvarožná and remains an active place of worship with regular services.

What is notable about the church bells?

One of the most interesting features of the church is its set of bells. The tower holds two newer bells, named Cyril and Methodius after the two brothers venerated as patron saints of Moravia. Alongside them hangs a much older piece: a bell known as Michael, cast around 1450 for the original Gothic church that once stood on this site. That bell is the direct physical link between today's neo-Gothic building and its medieval predecessor.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in the center of Tvarožná, a village in the Brno-venkov district of the South Moravian Region, a short distance from Brno. Its geographic coordinates are 49.1903 N, 16.7758 E, which makes it easy to locate on a map when planning a route through the surrounding area.
