About this place
The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Podolí is a Neo-Romanesque parish church in a small village in the Brno-venkov District, South Moravian Region. It serves as the main landmark of the village and the seat of the local Roman Catholic parish.
When was the church in Podolí built?
Construction began in 1896. The foundation stone was blessed on 23 August of that year by Jan Hudec, the parish priest of neighboring Šlapanice, under whose administration Podolí fell before it had a parish of its own. Building work took three years, and the church was consecrated on 7 May 1899 in the presence of the Bishop of Brno, František Saleský Bauer. The consecration date places the church among the sacred buildings erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a period of intensive expansion of parish infrastructure across Moravia.
Who designed the building?
The design came from Václav Dvořák and Karel Welzl, professors at the Czech industrial school in Brno. Both architects gave the building forms drawing on Romanesque architecture, which is why the church is described as Neo-Romanesque. This stylistic choice was typical of rural parish churches built in Moravia during that period, when patrons favored historicizing architectural models over contemporary forms.
Is the church a protected monument?
Yes. Since 1992 the building has been listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The listing acknowledges its historical and architectural value, even though it is neither the oldest nor the best-known church in the greater Brno region.
What is the history of the parish in Podolí?
An independent parish in Podolí was established on 1 March 1911, separated from the parish of Šlapanice. Before that date, residents of the village belonged to the church administration of Šlapanice — the same parish whose priest had blessed the foundation stone of the new church over a decade earlier. The creation of a separate parish was a natural consequence of the village having its own permanent, brick-built church.
What renovation work has the church undergone recently?
Between 1996 and 2000 the building went through an extensive renovation. Underfloor heating was installed, the roof was repaired, and the wooden structure of the bell tower along with its roofing were replaced. The renovation took place a few years after the church was added to the monument register, suggesting the work was carried out with its protected status in mind.
Where exactly is the church located?
Podolí lies in the Brno-venkov District, in the South Moravian Region, whose administrative center is the city of Brno. As the parish church, the building occupies a central position within the village's layout, which is typical of Moravian villages of this size.
