About this place
The Church of Saint Michael in Svrkyně is a Gothic church dating from the early 14th century, standing at the heart of a small village northwest of Prague. Its single-nave body, a polygonal presbytery in line with the nave's axis, and a four-sided vestibule in front of the west facade have made it the village's most recognizable landmark for centuries.
When was the church built and what happened to it over the centuries?
The church was built in the early 1300s. The oldest surviving record connected to Svrkyně and its parish dates from 1311, when a priest named Křtěn is mentioned as active in the village. The church also appears in papal tithe registers covering 1352–1405, confirming that it operated as an independent parish during that period.
The independent parish ceased to exist after the Hussite Wars. Administration of the church then passed to the parish in Lidice, and from 1786 it served as a filial (subsidiary) church of a neighboring parish. Today it belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Roztoky u Prahy.
What changes has the building undergone since then?
The church was renovated in 1856, 1862 and 1897. The last of these renovations, at the close of the 19th century, gave the interior its current pseudo-Gothic furnishings.
What is inside the church?
The presbytery is covered by a two-bay ribbed vault. The main altar was made by the Bušek brothers. Above it hangs a painting showing Saint Michael the Archangel defeating the devil, painted by F. Herčík in 1897 — the same year two stained-glass windows depicting Saint Procopius and Saint Adalbert were installed, produced in the workshop of Jindřich Pazdera. The church also holds altar paintings by J. Hellich.
Where is Svrkyně and how do you get to the church?

Are there services held at the church?
